Get Your Mind Fit for 2016

One of the most powerful ways of concreting your decisions, which helps you get vividly in touch with making the choices that are most congruent for you is the Fork in the Road visualisations.

Sit quietly for a while and clear your mind. You are about to embark on a fascinating journey of discovery … where you are, and where you are heading.

Just imagine you are walking along a path. This path represents your journey in life. The path behind you is your past and the path ahead is your future. Note the scenery that comes to light as you walk along the path and become aware of how you’re feeling, and what you’re thinking as you travel along it.

Write everything down as you go along.

The journey starts on the path above. As you walk, you see ahead of you a fork in the path … As the path divides, one path veers off to your left, whilst the other moves forward and to the right. Just stand for a moment and observe the two paths before you read on.

Now, you can choose to travel down the right road or the left road. I’m not going to tell you which – only you can choose the right road for you.

Before you choose the “right” road for you, let’s look at both roads and see what they hold. The road on the left is slightly downhill, so, on this path, you can simply coast your way into your future just as you are now. It is the road of doing what you have been doing thus far in your adult life. It means continuing with everything that you have in your life now in the same way.

If you have always felt dissatisfied or disappointed at work, then this will continue as such. If you have always longed to travel, and haven’t got round to it, this will always be so on this path. If you have always yearned to write, set up your own business, get fit, or be more assertive … then travelling down the left path will always mean that you will feel these yearnings.

You will always be wishing, hoping and wanting these things. The path is predictable and predetermined and you can see it continues for many miles, as far as you can see into the distance. The slope downwards keeps you moving along this path without any effort at all. In fact it would be hard to stop yourself from going in the direction that the path has laid out for you once on it, due to its inevitable momentum.

Consider now:

  • What is this like for you?
  • What are you thinking?
  • How does this feel?

Now imagine you have been travelling on this path for two years … So if you continue with your life, as it is right now, for another two years …

Consider:

  • What is it like?
  • Are you happy to have had another two years of the same journey?
  • Are you pleased with your achievements?
  • Are you content with life?
  • Do you want to keep going along this path?

Now, let’s return to the fork in the road and on to the right path. You notice the right path goes uphill and downhill, and meanders, so you can see and sense it has a few obstructions along the way that will be challenging, but not impossible to move beyond. It is intriguing, interesting and absorbing. This is the path that contains the fruits of your New Year’s resolution.

You are free to move in a way that you wish, and you have choices as to how you work with the challenges you encounter along the way. You don’t know where you will end up if you follow this path, but it seems not to matter, as the journey along this path is so incredibly fascinating and engaging. You sense that along the way you will really learn more about yourself, what you are capable of and all that you can do in your life. After all, you can only find your limits when tested and pushed, which this path will introduce you to.

So consider now:

  • What is this like for you?
  • What are you thinking?
  • How does this feel?

Now imagine you’ve been travelling on this path for two years … So if you continue with your life along this path for another two years …

Consider:

  • What is it like?
  • Are you happy to have had another two years of the same?
  • Are you pleased with your achievements?
  • Are you content with life?
  • How different is this to the left path?

You have the opportunity to concrete your New Year’s resolution again right now! Which path are you going to travel down, starting today?

Let us know how you get on!
